Baby Names???

0

March is right around the corner and we still have not decided on baby boy names.  Can any of you devotees help?  We are looking for a Krishna Conscious name that is not too hard to pronounce.

It is going to be extremely busy here at Kalachandji’s temple due to the GBC temple presidents meetings.  Some on the sannyasis on the list are their holinesses Romapada Swami, Bhaktimarga Swami, Bir Krishna Goswami, and Trivikrama Swami.  Also we have about 70 other guests such as Vaisesika Prabhu so many other inspiring devotees.  Stay tuned to the kirtans and classes online atwww.krishna.com/dallas or you can even call in to hear the live radio at 972-656-6002

oF course - Krishna is a

oF course - Krishna is a great name. And he could always shorten it to Kris if he gets self concious when hes growing up..

I like Rama as well -to me it sounds like a strong name . Balaram is also a nice name, and Nityananda too... I also like Chaitanya...

Nrsimaha is great too - ;) The only thing you might want to think about is wherre you live.. if you dont have a great cultural mix you might find yourself ( hopefully not ) with an angry child on your hands if all his school mates are called ben and jack etc while he has an exotic sounding indian name...

i have a jewish name ( which isnt even that exotic ) but its very jewish and i have a lot of problems with it...

at the very least you might want to give your son a name that can be shortened to something more ''western'' sounding ...

saying that- when i have kids , they are gona be saddled with the most exotic - but beautiful indian names i can think of - especially if its a girl |!!!!

names and astrology

(...) This program is based on the supposition that Vedic names are only astrologically chosen on the basis of the Moon's positions in a particular naksatra pada, i.e. a quarter of a lunar mansion. In Vedic astrology there are 27 naksatras each divided in padas, quarters. Thus you get 27 x 4 = 108 padas and each is assigned a particular aksara, sound. The theory is that depending on the position of the Moon in a particular pada that aksara will be the sound most suitable to begin the name of the person.

The problem is that this is a simplistic method, and only one of many used by astrologers. If you were to look up the sounds associated with Rohini, the star Krsna was born in, none starts with K, rather they start with O, Vaa, Vii, and Vo [Vaasudeva!]. There are obviously more sophisticated methods used by trained Vedic astrologers. These methods include determining the most powerful planet in the chart and then choosing a name based on the letters ruled by that planet.

Each planet rules a varga in the Sanskrit alphabet and depending on whether the planet is in an odd or even sign you choose an odd or even letter from the varga. Or you choose according to the lagna lord. Or best is when an experienced astrologer by studying the chart can understand the nature of the person and then name the person accordingly. This of course is how Garga Muni named Krsna and Balarama. Another problem is that there are many kinds of Vedic names, some are secret, some public, some just used for ceremonies, etc.

Another problem that arises with the naksatra method is what to do if the sound is one with few names or only ungainly names. In practice the naksatra aksara is not used so much for naming a person as for finding out the name of the object inquired in a prasna. But it can be used in naming.

Anyway with this caveat feel free to download the program and play around with it. It does basic chart calculations though in a rather unwieldy format of placing the planets in order of position from the lagna rather in the standard parampara order of the days of the week. This leads to a lot of confusion when trying to read or compare charts. But for anyone who is just starting this is a good program and the price is right, its free.

I have not checked on the accuracy of the planetary calculation. So you must use it at your own risk. One recommendation is that when choosing the ayanamsa stick with Lahiri. It is actually unnecessary and confusing on the author's part to offer so many non-standard ayanamsas on a beginner's program. Lahiri's and Raman's would have been more than sufficient.

A world of names

How about Rumplestiltskin? :-D I believe there is some book with names of Radha and Krishna from which the gurus pick names or something like this, or you can just look in the Cc at the different branches of the Chaitanya tree, and Shri Niyananda's devotees, etc.
