What is bhakti?

5

Bhakti is the love supreme – love and devotion for the ultimate source – love of God. And that love of God is reflected throughout this world in terms of our affection for the things and persons of this world. Once we know the source of that love, then we can properly focus our loving energies and motivation.

You'll find references to love of God in so many religions and spiritual endeavors. That's what bhakti is – "love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart . . ." - totally focused, unconditional love of God. That is bhakti.

The ultimate goal of the yoga system is bhakti – connecting with the Supreme with purified love – love devoid of any material or selfish motivation. You'll find references to such a state of consciousness in all religions, and it's the ultimate goal of the yoga system.
